Windows Virtual Desktops on Macs

Posted by Server@Work | Feb 27, 2014 11:00:00 AM

As Mac enthusiasts and business owners expand the footprint of Macs in businesses they are still met with the issue of having to run Windows-based software and work in predominantly Windows-based environments.  Some workarounds to help run Windows software include dual boot machines, Windows emulators, and local virtual desktops but these can lead to complicated operating environments and can cost businesses in time, lost data, and money.

Of the three previously mentioned solutions the virtual desktop is the more user-friendly.  Users keep their Mac operating system and run a fully functional Windows virtual desktop like a local app.  The virtual desktop operates like a Windows computer within the Mac allowing it to have its own network address, identity, and Windows software.  But this solution effectively doubles the number of "computers" needing to be supported, updated, secured, and administered.

A great solution to get the benefits of the virtual Windows desktop without the administrative and security headache is to use Citrix XenApp and the Citrix Receiver for Mac.  After loading all Windows-based software and files into the Citrix XenApp environment Mac users use the Citrix Receiver for Mac to get a virtual Windows desktop from Citrix.  This desktop and all Windows software is fully secured, administered, and maintained by Server@Work freeing your users and your business to simply work.
